Mater Dei Vs JSerra (January 18, 2013)

On January 18th Mater Dei barley escaped JSerra in a double overtime win by two (82-80) in a very heated Trinity League rivalry."I felt the league title on the line," Mater Dei forward Stanley Johnson said. "I felt our pride on the line. It was pretty nerve-wracking." Stanley Johnson didn't show one bit of nerve in the double overtime win by racking up 8 of his 24 points in the second overtime. To help out Johnson on the offensive end, Monarchs guard Elijah Brown (Butler Commit Class of 2013) had 19 points, 2 coming from clutch free throws with 5.8 seconds remaining in the second overtime. The Monarchs had a terrible night shooting the 3 ball shooting just 7 of 26.JSerra guard Jamal Aytes score 21 points in the double overtime loss. JSerra did a great job on the boards with a 43-30 advantage. JSerra guard Johnnie Vassar did not go down without a fight finishing with 19 points and 8 assists. Vassar took over in the 2 overtimes with multiple and-ones, clutch freethrows, and mid range jumpshots.“We’re getting closer and closer and closer,” JSerra coach Joedy Gardner said. “It shows that we can play with anybody. I'm proud of our guys for how hard they listened and executed. Our guys are not afraid to play against Mater Dei. We have a lot of respect for Coach McKnight and their program. We’re trying to get to that level.”
